Calculate a credit-weighted GPA
Use this calculator for a local semester GPA estimate. Enter one course on each line as course | credits | grade, for example Biology | 4 | A-. The calculator converts common letter grades to grade points, multiplies each point value by the course credits, and divides total points by total included credits. Courses with positive numeric credits are included in the total.
The result is a transparent estimate based on the rows you provide. Your institution may use a different grade scale, plus or minus rules, repeated-course policy, pass or fail treatment, or rounding rule. Check the registrar's policy before using this number for an official transcript decision.
What a GPA measures
A grade point average is a weighted mean. A three-credit course with 4.0 points contributes 12.0 quality points, while a one-credit course with 4.0 contributes 4.0. The calculator adds all quality points and divides by all included credits, so larger courses have proportionally more influence.
Each row is parsed independently. The course name is displayed in title case, the credit value must be a positive number, and the grade may be a supported letter such as A-, B+, or F or a numeric point value. Invalid credit text or zero and negative credits are skipped.
Read the output
GPA is the weighted result, Credits is the sum of included positive credits, and each following line shows the parsed points multiplied by course credits. Use those lines to audit a surprising result.
A GPA is meaningful only with its scale and policy. Keep the displayed total credits beside the number when comparing semesters or institutions.
Common mistakes
Do not swap the credit and grade fields. The expected order is course | credits | grade.
Do not assume every school maps A- to 3.7 or counts an F identically. Confirm your local catalog.
Calculator limits
The tool does not apply repeated-course replacement, withdrawals, pass or fail exclusions, honors weighting, or institution-specific policies.
It does not know whether a row belongs to a semester, cumulative record, or transfer-credit rule. Enter only the courses you intend to summarize.
Enter course rows
Open the Courses field and enter one row per course using course | credits | grade.
Use the same credit unit throughout the list. Decimal credits are accepted when your institution uses them.
Use supported letters: A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, or F. Numeric grade points are also accepted.
Run the tool, then review GPA, total credits, and each displayed course contribution. Compare the rows with your source record.
Calculation rules
Credit-weighted GPA
sum(credits_i × points_i) / sum(credits_i)
credits_i: positive credits in row i
points_i: parsed grade points in row i
The denominator is total included credits. A course with twice as many credits contributes twice as much when its grade point is the same.
Letter grade points
The built-in map is A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, and F = 0.
Invalid values
An unrecognized grade is parsed as zero points. A nonnumeric, zero, or negative credit value causes that row to be skipped.
The displayed GPA is formatted to two decimal places, while course points are shown to one decimal place.
Examples
Two equal courses
What is the GPA for A in 3 credits and B in 3 credits?
Courses
History | 3 | A
Writing | 3 | B
Convert A to 4.0 and B to 3.0.
Compute (3×4.0 + 3×3.0) / 6.
gpa
3.5
credits
6
The GPA is 3.50 across 6.0 credits.
Equal credits make the result the average of 4.0 and 3.0.
A higher-credit course
How does a four-credit A affect a one-credit C?
Courses
Lab | 4 | A
Seminar | 1 | C
Quality points are 4×4.0 = 16.0 and 1×2.0 = 2.0.
Divide 18.0 by 5 credits.
gpa
3.6
credits
5
The GPA is 3.60 across 5.0 credits.
The four-credit course has four times the influence of the seminar.
Plus and minus grades
What is the GPA for A-, B+, and B?
Courses
Physics | 3 | A-
Art | 2 | B+
History | 3 | B
Use points 3.7, 3.3, and 3.0.
Quality points total 11.1 + 6.6 + 9.0 = 26.7; divide by 8.
gpa
3.34
credits
8
The GPA is 3.34 across 8.0 credits.
The plus and minus distinctions change the point values.
A failing course
How does F affect a 3-credit A and 3-credit F?
Courses
Calculus | 3 | A
Chemistry | 3 | F
The quality points are 12.0 and 0.0.
Divide 12.0 by 6 credits.
gpa
2
credits
6
The GPA is 2.00 across 6.0 credits.
F contributes zero points but its positive credits remain in the denominator.
Numeric grade points
Can numeric points be entered directly?
Courses
Research | 3 | 3.5
Studio | 2 | 2.5
Use the numeric values 3.5 and 2.5 as points.
Compute (3×3.5 + 2×2.5) / 5 = 3.1.
gpa
3.1
credits
5
The GPA is 3.10 across 5.0 credits.
Numeric input bypasses the letter map and is used as the point value.
A skipped row
What happens to a course with zero credits?
Courses
Project | 0 | A
Economics | 3 | B+
The Project row has zero credits and is skipped.
Only 3×3.3 = 9.9 points and 3 credits remain.
gpa
3.3
credits
3
The GPA is 3.30 across 3.0 included credits.
Zero and negative credits do not enter the calculation.
Frequently asked questions
What row format should I use?
Use course | credits | grade, one course per line.
Are letter grades supported?
Yes. A through F with plus and minus variants in the documented map are supported.
Can I enter numeric points?
Yes. A finite numeric grade value is used directly as points.
Why was a course skipped?
The credit value may be invalid, zero, or negative. Such rows are excluded.
Does an F count in credits?
Yes, when its credits are positive; F contributes zero grade points.
Does the calculator produce an official GPA?
No. It is a local estimate and may differ from your institution's policy.
Why do credits change the result?
GPA is credit weighted, so a larger course contributes more quality points and denominator credits.
How many decimals are shown?
The GPA is displayed to two decimal places and course point lines to one.
